Roanoke Island and the Lost Colony… (NC)

Looking at Roanoke, at least in October on a beautiful day, it is hard to understand why that 1587 colony of 117 persons had such a tough time.

Today we drove to an historical center that describes life in the area when the settlers first arrived, in the 16th century. It includes an acre arranged like a settlement, with a few reenactors answering questions.

For lunch we went to the Full Moon, where I had only my second hamburger of our trip (a very good Angus blue cheese burger) and Marcia had a quiche. I had the Full Moon ale, and Marcia ordered the Royal Bitch chardonnay. Marcia and the waitress seemed to share some inner female humor in her choice.

After lunch we toured a small aquarium with some interesting displays (including an in-tank replica of the Monitor wreck), checked out the Elizabethan Gardens, got lost even though everything is either north or south and got back a half-hour late for GAM #4.

No wind tonight – just beautifully clear air and another spectacular sunset.
