Today's flush... Biking for bites… (VA)

Today we had breakfast at Mr. Baldy’s and drove to the Wallops NASA visitor center only to find it closed. We then drove back to Assateague Island. At the nature center we used the toilets (there is a reason for telling you this) and in each stall was a sheet explaining that the toilet dumps to the ground where "it" is naturally filtered and the water is returned to the building to flush again. I asked for an explanation of how well this cleansing action works, particularly in mass quantities, but nobody seemed to know. Afterwards we road our bicycles around a network of about seven miles of trails, encountering few people and little wildlife but very expansive views; the area is in a drought and looks similar to what we might expect on the African savanna: large dried-out lakes with low trees in the distance, punctuated occasionally by tall trees.

We returned to the ocean side for lunch and seashell collecting, and then to Island Creamery for WiFi access to do this blog (can’t keep the fans waiting).

This afternoon we are having cocktails with Ed and Susan from Sonoma -- they are the only other Californians on the caravan -- and  a caravan-organized pizza dinner. Hopefully not clam or oyster pizza. Tomorrow we pull up stakes and move on.
